Review of GSM/UMTS smartphone Samsung Galaxy S II i9100. Second part

Review of GSM/UMTS smartphone Samsung Galaxy S II i9100. Second part

The phone is running Gingerbread (2.3), the OS version has been redesigned for the TouchWiz4 interface, there are a lot of differences from previous models. Standard functions are implemented similarly to other models on 2.3, so we refer you to the corresponding review. And, of course, screenshots of each function so that you can evaluate it on this machine.

Slightly changed the mode of working with widgets, as well as their set. They are located at the bottom of the screen, there are quite a few unique, specific to Samsung widgets. In the main menu, you can create your own pages for icons, as well as folders for programs.

Task Manager is represented by a separate application, in it you can either close individual applications or completely clear the memory. Quite a handy utility that replaces the standard one.

The keyboard has Swype pre-installed for both landscape and portrait orientations and their respective keyboards. Recruitment with this technology is fast and convenient. The keyboard turned out to be successful.

When dialing a number, there is an intelligent search for a name, enter the first letters of the name – and the phone offers a list of names, the number of occurrences is shown on the right, you can call up the list with one click. For a specific subscriber, you can select any number from the address book. It's a nice addition to the standard Android functionality.

During an incoming call, you can reject it via SMS in one motion.

The device has both Samsung App Market and Android Market.

Google Maps is 5.x, which is the latest version available. The built-in GPS-receiver is hardware, there are no complaints about it.

Contacts

By default, your phone prompts you to save contacts to your phone memory, not to Gmail. In my opinion, this is not the best solution, LG also went the same way. It's good that you can choose the default action, that is, for example, save contacts only in one or another memory. A white/black list has appeared in contacts.

In the general list, you can swipe from left to right on a contact, which will start dialing the default number, or swipe the other way to start typing a message. A trifle that is not obvious, but speeds up the work with the phone. Exactly the same principle in the list of recent contacts, dialed numbers and so on.

Voice control

By double-clicking on the center key, you will call up voice control, based on the program from Vlingo. The first time you will be prompted to agree to the terms of the license, in the future the program will open immediately on the screen for typing or making calls. By pressing one key on the screen, you can start talking. The phone accepts the usual commands – call, SMS, and so on. Examples are given. Voice recognition is implemented relatively well, simple texts in English (and in others as well) are typed in the form of SMS messages that can be sent immediately. For a car when you are busy driving, this is an option. But we must understand that thoughtful dictation is required, pauses between words. Unfortunately, this is not very comfortable, and so far the function can be considered made for amateurs.

In SafeReader mode, the phone starts reading received SMS, says the caller's name (or number) aloud. This is for driving safety. In general, voice control does not cause any complaints, it is at a good level. The disadvantages include the fact that if you do not use this function, then it always takes up memory. I'm not sure that many people need this.

Google translator

This is Google's automatic translation feature, you say a phrase in one language, it translates into another. For English it works acceptable, for other directions of translation it sometimes gives out funny phrases. Works only with a network connection. Considering that the function is unique, and there are simply no alternatives, we can say that it is applicable in a number of situations (and with a number of reservations).

Polaris Office

Polaris Office allows you to view and edit MS Office files, a fairly simple solution. The prototypes had QuickOffice installed, but it was abandoned for some reason.

Photo editor. An interesting program that allows you to apply various filters to your photos, change them, add text, and so on. The editor is suitable for changing the picture on your phone when you do not need a computer, but you need to do something very quickly.

Video editor. The first and unconditional merit of this editor is that you can choose the output video resolution, and it can vary widely. You set the theme, which is used by default, you can add photos, music to the video, cut off a piece, or vice versa, glue the tracks. Maximum possibilities with a very simple and intuitive interface. I do not think that many people need such a function, but it is well implemented.

AllShare – стандартный uPnP, можно передавать файлы на ПК и обратно, используя Wi-Fi, прослушивать или смотреть их как там, так и на телефоне (если формат поддерживается).

Readers Hub

I liked the opportunity to get the latest newspaper on my phone, but the obvious disadvantage is that the developers tried to keep the appearance of the publication. It is not adapted to the screen of a mobile phone, which makes reading not always a pleasant and easy experience. Also, you can not save individual articles, pieces of text, send them by mail. This is in the minus program.

Magazines are represented by the Zinio service, here the idea is about the same as in newspapers, but the implementation is more interesting. You can also subscribe to the publications you are interested in or buy their individual issues. The service is well known on the Android platform, so I will not describe it in detail.

Books is powered by the Kobo service, you can search literature in different languages, download books, buy them. The set of books is quite large, there are free editions, as a rule, these are classics. As a book reader, this application is convenient, it’s a pity that you can’t upload your books to it, so if you plan to read on the device, you will have to install your own reader (and there are quite a lot of them).

Music Hub

Depending on the country, the music store that is hidden under this menu item differs. The number of songs may differ in the music store, the minimum in Samsung is called at the level of 800,000 pieces (Russia). From the application, you can listen to the song, buy it and download it to your phone. Recommendations are given on the central page, links to the most popular songs are given. A fairly unobtrusive application that you can not use at all if you don't need it.

Game Hub

The most common application store that allows you to view lists of games, see the description for a particular toy, buy them. Game provider and content may vary by country. It's amazing, but I don't understand why it was necessary to multiply the entities and add this section, because it does not have any social functions, unlike the same Samsung app store, which also remained in the phone. We added this function explicitly for the sake of quantity, it is incomprehensible to me.

Social Hub

One of the most controversial items on the phone, as the Social Hub is actually a feature from the Bada platform that has been ported to Android. The user does not see this, but all his accounts are entered on the Samsung servers in order to provide push (only enabled for mail). In the application itself, you are shown mail messages and SMS / MMS in one stream, which is terribly inconvenient and duplicates the usual SMS items, as well as the mail section. The second tab is Feeds, where messages from Twitter/Facebook (if they are set up) come in a continuous stream. For people who have more than a dozen friends on social networks and a fairly active life, this application is useless, as in a matter of minutes it turns into a hodgepodge. It is impossible to follow the feed of messages, to respond comfortably to individual ones. I would have preferred separate Twitter apps instead of such a list, as well as a separate Facebook app (good thing they can be easily downloaded on Android). There is no particular point in reinventing the wheel in the case of Social Hub, the function turned out to be strange.

In the phone book, when viewing a name, there is an Activities tab, which shows the latest entries from social networks associated with a person's name. The Media tab shows his photos, also taken from social media. It's pretty convenient. Let's just say that this part of the Social Hub is still somehow explainable, but the main application does not look convenient. It is unlikely that someone will use it all the time.

Calendar

Do you know what I'm missing from the regular Android calendar? Week number designations. Samsung initially took care of this and shows this little thing in all calendars, which is convenient. Also, the calendar in SGS2 has been heavily redesigned compared to the previous version. When viewing for a month, days with events are highlighted in small squares, the more there are, the more events. For a single day, you can view three events, they are displayed at the bottom. Quite a convenient calendar, which is very different from the standard one in Android.

< img src="https://mobile-review.com/review/image/samsung/galaxy-s2-2/calendar/06.jpg"/>

Tasks. Regular tasks with priority setting, the ability to specify a warning time.

Music player

The musical capabilities of the device are familiar, there is support for 5.1 mode for headphones, the sound becomes voluminous. Plus equalizers, but they are not customizable. Everything else is quite familiar – a filter by artists, albums, song titles. The quality of music playback is not bad, the device sounds good. The quality of music playback is average, the device sounds comparable to the first Galaxy S, but loses a lot to the same Apple iPhone 4. For my unpretentious taste, this is not an ideal device for music. Unfortunately, Samsung failed to take this parameter to a qualitatively new level.

It lacks a large number of visual effects, it is one and completely useless. Album art is shown in the list, but there is no scrolling through the cover art in landscape mode. The player interface has been slightly redesigned. FLAC support has been added to standard files.

< td>

FM radio. Up to 99 radio stations can be stored in the device's memory, the range of available frequencies is from 87.5 MHz to 108 MHz. There is an automatic setting of all stations, but for individual channels you cannot assign your own name, they are always displayed as a frequency, numbers. The radio also works in speakerphone mode. The implementation of the radio is normal, the device does not receive all radio stations well, but in general everything is at a normal level, comparable to phones from other manufacturers. The radio is running in the background.

The RDS function shows not only the title of the radio station in the general list at the top, but also other information. Radio programs can be stored in the phone's memory (depending on the country).

< /tbody>

Video Player

DivX/XVid is supported, there is also an option to turn off subtitles. The device reproduces files up to several gigabytes in size without any problems. The video thumbnail is shown in the file list, a green line is displayed at the bottom, showing how much you have watched in this file. The model abandoned Mosaic Search, this function is not here. The video is adjusted to the screen geometry, the screen illumination level is adjusted. In principle, as a portable player, this device, if not ideal, is close to it. Two factors for success – screen size and SuperAMOLED+.

Mini Diary. An application in which you can take notes about your life, insert photos, indicate the weather, location. And then publish it all, for example, on Facebook. The thing is convenient and not burdensome.

Impressions

The speaker in the phone is loud, at the level of the first Galaxy S, there are no special differences. If you liked the first model in this parameter, then the second one will do. The vibrating alert is rather weak, it is not always possible to feel it from the clothes.

I like the device without any reservations, from a technical point of view it is the best that is on the market today. It's the de facto best Android phone (fastest, best screen, best connectivity – UMTS, HSUPA, Wi-Fi direct, VoIP telephony, non-Google voice recognition). No manufacturer has the technical ability to approach this level of technology in the coming months.

The cost of the model in Russia in May will be about 33 thousand rubles, which is a lot (Europe 650-700 euros). On the other hand, an alternative to this device is the already cheap Galaxy S (22 thousand rubles), buyers have the opportunity to choose. If you want the largest set of features and programs – take a new phone, if you just want a good solution – choose last year's flagship.

The situation for Samsung is repeated. The release of the first Galaxy S made the company a leader in the Android market, and other manufacturers began to create similar solutions. But the release of the Samsung S II means that many companies simply won't be able to afford this level of technology. For them, this is a dead end path of development. For example, in Sony Ericsson, the creation of a similar product will cost a lot of money, and it will turn out to be unprofitable, the same story for other companies.

The heated discussion of this model on our forum shows a simple truth: the model did not go unnoticed. Moreover, exactly the same discussions were at the release of the first Galaxy. Another interesting point, the voices of those who believe that there is nothing new in the device, and the price is high, and it is worth buying the first Galaxy, are often heard. A classic situation that shows that both products can exist on the market at the same time.

An alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S II is the Optimus 2x, built on the NVIDIA Tegra2 platform. Hardware solutions are comparable in terms of performance, but LG's solution loses in terms of screen, the absence of a large number of additional features (I don't even take into account the interface or additional programs, but only hardware solutions). The cost of these models is the same. It should be noted that the i9003 model built on the platform will be released in the summer

Game Hub

The most common application store that allows you to view https://cars45.co.ke/listing/toyota/hilux/page90?listing_id=YouKsyx7syy21Y04https://cars45.co.ke/listing/toyota/hilux/page90?listing_id=YouKsyx7syy21Y04 lists of games, see the description for a particular toy, buy them.

Video Player

DivX/XVid is supported, there is also an option to turn off subtitles. The device reproduces files up to several gigabytes in size without any problems. The file list shows a thumbnail of the video, with a green bar at the bottom showing how much you've watched in that file.

When dialing a number, there is an intelligent name search, enter the first letters of the name – and the phone offers a list of names, the number of occurrences is shown on the right, you can call up the list with one click.

In the general list, you can swipe from left to right on a contact to start dialing the default number, or swipe the other way to start typing a message.

AllShare – standard uPnP, you can transfer files to a PC and back using Wi-Fi, listen or watch them both there and on your phone (if the format is supported).

Readers Hub

This application contains three functions at once – working with periodicals, in particular, with newspapers, working with books, as well as with magazines.

Newspapers are provided by the PressDisplay service, you can sort the list by country or language, select the newspapers you are interested in and download them. You can also subscribe to selected newspapers. The cost is not very high, it may differ depending on the country where you are. Initially, up to 7 free downloads are offered, you can try to browse newspapers, see how interesting the service is for you.
